Dec. 27th, 2005 04:29 amI just watch 5 episodes of Slayers (season 1) for the first time in...I'd say about 4-5 years.
This is my first time watching those episodes in Japanese, though.
Slayers is definitelly one of the better dubs, but it can't hold a candle to the Japanese version. The jokes flow SO much better when you're not trying to match English words to the mouth movements. Also the voices make it so much easier. Especially with Gourry. Don't get me wrong, I love Eric Stuart to death (he's one of the few I've ever heard who can actually ACT while he's dubbing :P), but when it comes to Gourry, the whole point is that he's this loyal, attractive knight-in-shining-armor who saves the day with an awesome sword and hot poses to match, and then he catches you off guard when you discover that he's got kind of a *BVVVVVVVVVVVT* neutral zone around his head (/George Carlin). His Japanese voice works so much better with the sexy, masculine, heroic voice, then he can flip-side and do the cute clueless moments. Eric Stuart was in the clueless voice most of the time. He could do the serious stuff really well, but not like the original guy.
Also, in English, he always yells "Light come forth!" when he pulls out hislightsaber holy sword (whatever they called it). Ok for the first time, when you're not expecting it, but after three seasons, you kinda get tired of hearing Eric Stuart yell "Light come forth! Raaaargh!" every time there's a battle. In Japanese, he just says "Hikari-o!" Quick, to the point, and over quick enough that you don't pay attention to it like you do "Light come forth."
And somehow, Lina's squeeky chibi-shojo voice works so much better with her genki personality. Not sure why. Maybe because Lisa Ortiz's Lina voice annoys me? *shrug*
I think I'm gonna change my mood theme sometime in the beginning of 06. The theme? Slayers, of course ^_^
Anyway, I'm done babbling now. Hmmm...to sleep, or to play Harvest Moon...hmmmm.....
