Jan. 31st, 2008 10:02 pmRock groaned, his consciousness returning. He tried to crack his eyes open, but the light made it impossible as of her. His eyes were still adjusted to darkness.
"Too bright…" He muttered, rolling over so he was on his stomach. At least now, he could open his eyes. Once they were adjusted, he decided to stand up… only to blink in surprise, realizing that he didn't know where he was. "Where is this…?" He mused to himself. The part of him that was a digger was slightly disappointed that he didn't feel compelled to explore, but something told him that this place would only cause him to get lost even further if he did…
Off in the distance, there was a faint sound of music; an upbeat, catchy melody played on some sort of flute-like instrument.
And he caught it. Once he did, his sense to explore seemed to come back alive. Sure, he didn't know anything about this place, but then again he didn't know anything about the ruins he explored, so maybe this was the same thing.
And so he began to follow the tune.
The melody led him through a series of wooden tunnels and dark passages, growing louder with each turn. Before long the tunnels lead to a canyon filled with tall grass. The music seemed to be coming from straight ahead.
Rock took note of how the zigzagging woods really did remind him of a ruin, but… this place was nicer. Even though he was relatively lost, the environment, the tune… it was all just so nice. He didn't mind if he was lost here a bit longer.
But he wasn't selfish enough to put his own needs before others, mainly the family that was probably worried sick about him, so he went ahead and crossed the canyon.
Through the tall grass there was finally a flight of stairs leading to a large clearing surrounded by the natural walls of the forest. At the far end was a building of stone, its only entrance at the top of what looked to be broken stairs. And beneath the unreachable temple, a young girl dressed all in green sat on a treestump, playing the melody that lead the boy here on a wooden ocarina.
Rock felt himself blush ever so slightly at the sight of the girl, but it only lasted momentarily. The melody she was playing attracted him here, so for all he knew, it could also attract some reaverbots here. He ignored the part of him that kept craving him to explore the temple for now, instead focusing on the girl. "Uh, miss…?" He called out, approaching her. "If you keep playing that, some reaverbots could come after you… it's not safe."
The girl stopped playing at the sound of his voice and looked up at him in a fright. She stood quickly, backing away around the stump, looking at him in startled wonder.
Rock blinked. A small part of him debated comparing this encounter to his first encounter with Sera… in which he found her naked in the dead middle of a snowstorm on Forbidden Island. He decided not to move, but raised his arms up in a gesture showing that he meant no harm. "I'm not going to hurt you, miss…" He said, speaking softly and comforting. Unlike Sera, this girl actually seemed afraid of him. "I'm just trying to help…"
The girl stared at him, apprehensive but strangely curious. She didn't move from behind her treestump.
After a long hesitation, she spoke in a small, nervous voice.
"...How did you get here?"
"…I… followed the tune…" Rock admitted truthfully, then blushed slightly and gazed off to the side. "…it was a good tune…" He muttered, a bit embarrassed.
Hesitantly she made her way back around the stump. She still didn't seem certain of him, but the look in her eyes was gradually changing from fear to curiosity.
Rock made no move to back away or walk forward, instead deciding that the best thing to do would be to remain silent and make no movements. He didn't want to scare her anymore, not a cute girl like her with pointed ears…
…wait, pointed ears?
The girl finally got closer, looking the boy up and down, contemplating.
Childlike, she circled him, looking him over. Then she spoke again.
"You have strange ears..."
For the first time in a few years, Rock found himself feeling self-conscious. "No I don't…" He muttered embarrassedly, his body sulking slightly. He had normal ears, didn't he…?
"But they're....round." the girl said, staring curiously.
"Well… yours are pointed, aren't they…?" He replied, his own eyes gazing at her ears. "…I've never seen pointed ears…"
"Why aren't yours?"
"Round ears are normal where I'm from…" He explained, although he self-consciously reached up to scratch the side of his head, covering one of his ears in the process. His expression looked slightly sheepish. "You're the first person I've seen with pointed ears… they're cute…"
The girl suddenly stopped and stepped back a little, her face glowing a slight red. Apparently compliments like that were unusual to her.
"Th...thank you?"
For a moment, Rock blinked, curious as to why she'd reacted so strongly thanks to a simple compliment. Ultimately however, he offered her a wide warm smile. "You're welcome."
She smiled shyly, trying to hide her blush.
"...I'm Saria." she said in a small voice again.
Rock continued to smile. "My name's Rock. Rock Volnutt. It's nice to meet you, Saria!"
Rock? That's a funny name. Saria didn't voice that thought though, she didn't want to be rude. So she just kept her shy smile. "It's nice to meet you too...Rock." she felt a little strange addressing a person that way.
"You're not from around here, are you?"
"Well… I don't really know where 'here' is, actually…" Rock admitted sheepishly. "Last I remember, I was exploring a ruin, then I lost consciousness… and woke up here. I figured maybe I was in an island…"
"This is the Lost Woods." Saria informed him, "In Kokiri Forest."
Rock raised an eyebrow curiously. Lost Woods? Kokiri Forest? "I've… never heard of this place." He admitted, albeit reluctantly. Was he in an uncharted island?
Saria tilted her head. Never heard of it? He REALLY wasn't from around here. "Where are you from?"
"Well, I was found in the Nino Island ruins… but, I mostly just live on Gramps' airship with him and Roll." He explained, as if he was still in his own world. He really had no reason to think otherwise yet.
Saria blinked. Ok he'd lost her. Airship? How could a ship go in the air? "I've never heard of that either..."
She'd… never heard of an airship? Just where was he? "W-Well, it's not that important…" He finally resolved to say, chuckling nervously. In reality, he was nervous about the fact that he was lost, but he didn't feel that worrying Saria with his problems would help.
"...ok." Saria wasn't entirely convinced that it didn't matter. If he was lost, it must be important. But she decided not to press the issue.
"So what was that tune you were playing?" Rock asked curiously, a smile still on his face. "It sounded really pretty."
Saria blushed again. "You really think so?" she asked bashfully, "Actually...I wrote it."
Rock sat down on the ground in front of her and looked up to her with a genuine bright smile, his emerald eyes shining. He then nodded at her. "I thought it was really pretty… you must be really talented if you wrote it!"
And again with the blushing. Saria also sat, feeling awkward being the only one standing.
"You really think so?" she repeated, still red.
Despite himself, he thought her blushing was rather cute… actually, she was cute in general. However, Rock nodded and widened his smile. "Of course! I wouldn't say so unless it was the truth."
Saria brought her knees up to her chest in a little awkward ball, hoping to hide her red face at least a little. "Th-thank you..."
Rock chuckled slightly, good-naturedly. "You don't have to be embarrassed, Saria… besides…" He himself began to blush as he spoke, gazing off to the side. "You look cute when you blush…"
...wait for it...waaaaaaiiiiiit for it.
....yup. She blushed harder.
"Nobody's ever called me cute before..." she murmered.
Okay, now that was a crime. He may have spent countless hours inside ruins, but he definitely knew when someone was cute. "Well you are." He assured her, smiling at her warmly.
Saria smiled shyly, then turned away, still blushing, and stood up. It was time for a topic change; all the blood rushing to her face was making her dizzy.
"Well we shouldn't stay here much longer. It's getting dark."
Rock noticed that too. It was a bit hard to notice the transaction, but he could definitely tell that the Woods weren't as bright as they were when he first woke up. "So, do you live around here then?" He asked, standing up himself and dusting off his armor. Then a thought crossed his mind.
"Is… is the dark dangerous around here?"
"It's not really dangerous, but it's harder to find the way back when it's dark." She went a little ahead and looked back at Rock with a smile, "Come on, I'll take you to the village!"
Rock smiled back and began to follow Saria. It felt refreshing to meet someone as nice as her… not that he didn't know anyone back home like that, but it was still always nice to meet someone like that. "Alright!" He called out to her.
Saria lead him through the natural tunnels of the woods, soon coming to another clearing. This time they were at the top of a hill, and down below was a village. Tiny wooden cottages were scattered through a field of low grass, a little pond with a waterfall, and lots and lots of glowing lights, too big to be fireflies, dancing around the clearing.
The village in itself didn't necessarily surprise Rock all that much. He would admit however, that the quaintness of the village touched some part of his heart. However, his curiosity was currently intrigued by the glowing lights that seemed to dance around the village. "What are those…?" He mused to himself in wonder, his eyes transfixed on the lights.
Wow he REALLY wasn't from this world if he didn't know THAT. Still Saria smiled and looked up at them with him.
"Those are fairies. They live here with us Kokiri."
"…Fairies?" Rock asked, both in wonder and incredulously. Weren't fairies supposed to be fictional? Only talked about in fairy tales? "…Fairies are real?" He asked again.
Saria blinked at the boy. "Well...yes."
Rock was silent for a few seconds, contemplating the thoughts. Fairies… were real? Had they always been real? Were they only native to this forest maybe? "…They're… really pretty." He finally said. "The dancing lights…"
Saria smiled again. "They act as guardians of this forest, along with the Great Deku Tree. Everyone has a fairy of their own."
Rock looked away from the fairies and over to Saria, smiling now. "Really? Do you have one too?" He asked, his curiosity growing.
Saria beamed. "Of course! I am one of the Kokiri."
As if on cue, a little yellow ball of light fluttered out from under Saria's hair and circled the two of them excitedly. On a closer look the ball had wings, which flapped gracefully as it flew.
"This is Fehn." Saria whispered, "My guardian fairy."
Rock noticed the wings, and found himself amused that the fairies could easily be mistaken for lights. Still, they were cute in their own respect. "Nice to meet you, Fehn." He greeted, bowing forward respectfully in front of the fairy.
Fehn circled Rock curiously, a little sparkly noise following in her wake. Saria couldn't help but giggle.
"I think she likes you, Rock."
Rock himself chuckled, watching as the fairy circled him. "Well, I like her too, so that's good!"
Saria giggled again, then suddenly yawned as the sun continued to disappear behind the curtain of trees.
"Rock, we should get to my house." she said, still smiling while she rubbed a sleepy eye, "You can spend the night, then tomorrow you can meet the Great Deku Tree."
Rock blinked over at her, but then smiled and nodded. "You don't have to let me stay in your home," He said, but his smile went from a pleasant one to a warm one. "But I appreciate it, Saria."
Saria padded ahead. "My sisters are probably asleep by now. You can sleep in my bed."
They went down the hill to the houses below. The house they were heading for was ever-so-slightly bigger than the others, and was the only one with an upper level that snaked a long bridge through the middle of the village. As they reached it Saria paused, looking up at a treehouse next door with a little sad look, but then she shook it off and continued toward the house.
Rock caught her sad glance, and made a note of it, but didn't press the issue. He found that he didn't like it when she was sad. However, something else she said caught his curiosity. "Wait… your bed? But where are you going to sleep then?"
Saria smiled. "I don't mind sleeping on the floor. It doesn't get that cold here."
She pushed the worn curtain that was the door and peered in first. In the faint glow of a dying torch inside, she saw the two girls she shared her house with asleep in their respective beds and crept in quietly, holding the curtain back to welcome Rock in.
Rock shook his head. "I'm not going to let you sleep on the floor. I'm used to hard surfaces; I'll sleep on the floor, alright?" He whispered, making sure that his voice wouldn't wake the others. "Really, I don't mind at all."
Saria pouted slightly as she leaned against the wall, sliding the boots off of her feet, "What kind of guest would I be to have you sleep on the floor?"
"Well… still, I don't want you to sleep on the floor…" Rock argued weakly. "It wouldn't be right…"
Now barefoot, Saria sulked and padded over to her bed. She was too tired to keep arguing.
"Alright." she murmered, defeated, "If you're sure..."
Rock smiled and nodded. "Don't worry," He whispered. "I'm used to sleeping on hard surfaces, so it won't be a problem. Besides, I'd… feel bad if I forced you to sleep on the floor…" He admitted sheepishly.
Saria blushed again, slipping under the thin blanket on her bed and turning away a little. She ran a hand through her hair, sleepy.
"You're really nice, Rock..." she murmered, stating the obvious.
Obvious or not, Rock still blushed at the compliment as he settled himself on the floor. "Anyone would've done it…" He murmured, being humble.
Saria smiled, settling into the blanket. "Good night." she said with a sleepy blush.
Rock smiled at her softly as he settled down on the floor, his eyes falling closed. "Good night, Saria…"
