Notes: Slight AU in Fugen’s backstory? Silliness and fluff abounds. Also good Lord, how long has it been since I wrote one of these? o_O
Fugen moved on autopilot as he sat in class. Still uncertain what to make of his new surroundings in this Sennin world, he found ways to occupy himself and keep his nervous hands busy. It had been a long time since his mother taught him origami, but somehow it came naturally to him when he found some paper in his new dormitory.
He looked around the room as he creased the newest fold in his creation, listening to the teacher. It was a small group, all of them about his age, and nearly all of them looking just as anxious and out of place as he felt.
Except one. A dark-haired boy a few rows away was leaning back in his seat, snoring quietly. Fugen recognized him as the boy he was sharing a room with. They hadn’t had much chance to talk with all the business getting them registered as Doushi, and now that he thought about it, the other boy seemed to always be sleeping.
A little glint of mischief came to Fugen’s face and he looked down to continue his work, busily folding the paper every which way.
It took several minutes before he finished, but a satisfied smile came to his face as he looked the completed project over. Then he set it in front of him, lining it up as needed, estimating as close as he could, and with a quick glance up to see that he wasn’t noticed, he gave the little paper crane a good, hard flick on the tail.
Just as he’d hoped, it sailed across to the other boy, bouncing off of his nose and landing in front of him. And also just as he’d hoped, it woke him up. He suppressed a giggle. The boy blinked in a daze for a moment, rubbing his nose, then as he looked around wondering what just hit him, he saw the little bird and picked it up. He looked it over, eyeing the work with a raised eyebrow, then looked around, finally making eye contact with Fugen. Fugen just smiled brightly, giving him a quick wave. Puzzled, the other boy waved back, seeming to make the connection. He set the crane down again, giving it another curious look before going back to sleep.
Fugen just smiled and started on another.
