Ness didn't have a doubt now that this was his mind. Were it anywhere else, his mother and sister wouldn't be here, or the family dog. They didn't possess the PSI powers of teleportation like he did. And even if they did, they wouldn't have been able to bring that familiar couch with them. For a moment he thought it might have been a dream, but even dreams didn't have the precise and perfect detail this had.
Slowly he approached the corner that made up the feux living room, where his mother sat on the couch, smiling. As soon as his bare feet touched the carpet she greeted him.
"Hello, Ness dear." she crooned in her sweet motherly way, "Are you tired from your travels?"
His heart clenched slightly. It really WAS her. God it felt so good to see her...talking to her on the phone was one thing, but to see her in the flesh, to hear her in person...it was almost too much after everything he had gone through.
"Come on, sit by me. Have a rest." she scooted over on the couch to make room for him.
Slowly he complied, padding past Tracy and taking a seat on the edge of the couch. He stayed there a moment before scooting back all the way and curling to lie down on his side, resting his head in his mother's lap. He could practically feel her smile as she rested a hand on the top of his head, brushing through his bedraggled hair with her long, slender fingers.
"You can stay here forever, if you wish." she whispered. And as soon as she did, Ness melted. He forgot all about Paula, Jeff and Poo, about Giygas, about the sound stone, he even forgot that this was all in the world created in his mind.
He was home.
He buried his face in her dress, choking out a small sob.
"Mommy..."
"Shhh, it's alright. I'm here." she soothed, petting his hair.
