The toddler looked around the market curiously as his mother tugged him along gently by the hand. There was so much activity and so little time to experience it. Musicians playing high-energy songs as townspeople danced, entertainers dazzling audiences with magic and acrobatics, the smell of dumplings and fancy teas. The boy tried to reach all of them, but his mother continued to urge him forward.
After a long walk they finally stopped at a lonesome medicine stand. She let go of her son’s hand to browse the herbs. He stayed close by, looking around until a certain blue-haired figure in the crowd caught his attention. His eyes went wide, a smile stretched across his young face, and he took advantage of his mother’s distraction to make a dash for the other person, his tiny feet thumping heavily as he ran.
Fugen and Taikoubou had taken a break from their fishing trip to look for something to eat in town, and had stopped for the moment, despite Taikoubou’s protesting, to watch a juggler they were passing by. Distracted by the show, he didn’t expect something to suddenly latch onto his leg. He blinked, looking down. A dark-haired little boy grinned up at him, hugging the Sennin’s leg.
An amused smile reached Fugen’s lips, and he knelt to the boy’s height, smiling sweetly.
“Well hello there. What’s your name?”
The child just grinned and giggled, releasing Fugen’s leg and instead taking his hand, squeezing it firmly in both hands and giving it a rough shake up and down.
“It’s nice to meet you too.” Fugen replied, beaming, “Where are you parents, little one?”
He didn’t reply with words, but he understood. Still holding Fugen’s hand he turned and pointed to the woman still browsing the medicine stand. Fugen spotted her immediately, noting the family resemblance.
“She’s pretty.” he complimented. The boy smiled in response. Then he pointed behind Fugen, babbling curiously. Fugen looked; he must have wanted to see what the crowds were watching. He smiled in understanding and carefully lifted the child into his arms, supporting him on the hip so they could both watch. The boy flailed happily, laughing and pointing at the juggler balancing plates, and Fugen couldn’t help smiling right with him.
They watched for a few minutes before they turned at the sound of a called name.
“Xing! Xing, where are you?”
Fugen’s eyes met the woman’s; the boy’s mother. Her eyes went slightly wide as she saw him. He was used to it; the ring of light around his head was a dead giveaway that he wasn’t human. He smiled, stepping lightly to her and offering her son back.
“You have a darling child, miss. You and your husband must be very proud.”
Hesitantly she reached to take little Xing back, her cheeks red as she continued to stare.
“Tha…thank you, Sennin-sama.”
“Oi, Fugen!” Taikoubou called from a few feet away, lips puckered in a pout, “Let’s go already! I’m starving!”
Fugen chuckled at his friend’s pout, and as he turned to catch up he waved goodbye to the two humans as Xing muttered “buhbah!”
“Look at you,” Taikoubou teased as Fugen reached him, “You’re so mothering, Fugen. Are you really a boy?”
He just smiled, sidling close to his friend.
“A little motherly behavior would to Bou-chan good too.” he teased right back before giving him a quick peck on the cheek and hurrying ahead.
Blinking at the kiss, Taikoubou took five seconds total to chase after him, exclaiming “H-hey!!! What’s that supposed to mean?!”
