Prompt #5: Anxious
Fandom: Flamingo Heights/Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Genre: General
Rating: G
Notes: Taken from when Midna returned to Flamingo Heights, just after being attacked by Zant.
Midna’s eyes snapped open as she let out a gasp upon awakening. Gasping to catch her breath, she sat up quickly, looking around to assure herself that she was indeed still in the guest room Ayame had set up for her.
Why did the terror of a nightmare always remain in the waking world?
She sighed, slumping back on the bed. She hoped to the Goddesses she hadn’t cried out in her sleep; the last thing she needed was for Ritsu to worry.
This was getting insane. As little sleep as she needed, she couldn’t even feel rested. Every time she closed her eyes, his face came back to haunt her. She remembered every detail as though she were still there. She could still feel his icy breath on her neck, hear his sharp, rasping voice in her ear. She could even remember the pain from her arms being wrenched behind her back.
As she reflected on the incident, she could have kicked herself for how helpless she felt. She, Midna, the Twilight Princess, completely terrified and at the mercy of her enemy. She already had to face him once, and even a second time she underestimated his power. How could she have been so stupid?
Had living in Flamingo Heights made her soft?
A wet dog nose nudged her hand, bringing her back to reality. Looking toward the source, her malamute, Diener, hopped carefully onto the bed and whined, lying down with his head and front paws on her chest like a blanket. She gave him a sad smile and wrapped an arm around him, scratching behind his ears lightly.
“I’m sorry, liebling…” she whispered, using the German term lovingly, “I know you’re worried.”
Diener whined again quietly, nuzzling her cheek and offering one quick lick.
Midna snuggled up to the huge dog, taking comfort in running her fingers through his thick fur. But even as her pet’s presense soothed her, she still couldn’t bring herself to fully relax.
She spared a glance at her violin case resting against the wall and wondered if some practice on a rooftop somewhere would help.
