Notes: Started from the end of a log I never finished with our old Link.
“Girl, when I get ahold of you, you better watch out!”
That shout could be heard across the park, coming from Link running after his date, Midna, who had challenged him to a game of tag. Of course, she had the advantage of being faster than he, and she had the ability to hover, which meant she lacked the limits of friction.
Far ahead of him, Midna looked over her shoulder as she kept going.
“Promises~” she taunted.
“What was that supposed to mean, huh?” Link laughed, out of breath as he kept chasing.
Suddenly, as he’d already done earlier that evening, he tripped over his own feet and fell face-first into the grass with an “OOF!”
Midna stopped, turning as she heard him fall, in time to see him roll slightly down the hill. Still high on the moment she just called out to him.
“Are you ok?”
Link didn’t move or answer. Midna tilted her head; what was he up to? She got closer.
“Link?”
Still nothing.
“Link, this isn’t funny. Answer me!”
Soon she was close enough to see him. He looked like he was unconscious. Hesitantly she got closer, putting a hand on his shoulder.
“Link…?”
“GOTCHA!” Link suddenly reanimated, springing upright and grabbing Midna, pulling her into a bear-hug. Midna yelped and laughed in spite of herself, letting herself settle in his arms as he slumped back down on the grass, giving her a sly smirk. She looked up at him, resting her head on his chest, and pouted slightly.
“You cheated.”
“Yeah, and?” Link snarked playfully, cuddling her, “This is more fun anyway.”
Midna would have pouted more, but she could hear how hard his heart was beating. Ok, so he could use a rest. So she just settled on top of him in silence.
In the distance, there was the sound of a bell chiming. The duo raised their heads in unison to listen, and above them there was a whistling sound as fireworks went off. The New Year had arrived. Link and Midna watched the fireworks lighting the sky, welcome 2008, then looked at each other.
“Happy New Year.” Link smiled, ruffling Midna’s hair.
She just smiled, scooting close enough to reach him for the traditional kiss.
