Jade wasn’t a quitter. Nor was she one to let wrong-doing go ignored. Two traits that at the moment, she heavily resented.

It had barely been two days since she was given this job; to be the eyes and ears of Hillys and find out exactly what the Alpha forces were up to, and bring photographic evidence to the public. And in those two days, she learned the disgusting truth;

Human trafficking. The Alphas were kidnapping the very Hillyans they swore to protect.

She and Double H saw it all in the slaughterhouses. How the victims were crammed into boxes, some contorted inhumanely to fit in the crates, and shipped in shuttles heading for the moon, where God only knew what would happen to them. They saw the vacant, almost dead gazes of the victims as they were packaged, as though all the will had been taken from them. And they saw their supposed enemies in the war, the Domz, looking over the operation.

To think Pey’j had to go through all that now, after being kidnapped in the nutripills factory.

She was endlessly grateful that they were getting out. Her head was spinning after seeing everything before her eyes. And sneaking past the guards, coming millimeters from death at every turn, took a toll on her nerves. Even as she hid it, joking with Double H and staying focused on her mission, she could feel her hands shaking each time she reached for her camera.

She staggered toward the tunnel where the hovercraft was parked, in a daze. Double H didn’t stray too far from her side, loyal to his partner as ever.

“We’ll have to report back to IRIS.” he said after a long silence, as the hovercraft beeped and opened its door, sensing Jade’s SAC. Jade didn’t answer, safe for a quick nod. She could feel her legs shaking as she took a few steps, stumbling toward the edge of the platform. Suddenly her knees buckled and she dropped to the floor and retched into the sewer water below. Double H hurried to her, kneeling and putting a hand on her back.

She coughed and caught her breath, sliding back slightly and dropping her forehead onto the cool tile. “God…”

“Are you alright, Miss Jade?”

“Why are they doing this?” she muttered, hoarse, “It’s inhuman…it’s horrible…”

“I know…but that’s why we’re here, Miss Jade. That’s why we must keep going. Hillys is depending on us to be strong.” he put both hands on her shoulders, helping her up.

“I know, Double H…” Jade leaned on him, strength not yet returning, “I know…”

This armored man’s soft eyes watched her, holding her steady. He knew she was hit hard with this mission, but just as he said, they had to keep going.

He considered for a moment before hooking an arm under her legs and lifting her.

“I’ll drive. You must rest before we get to IRIS.”

Jade blinked, suddenly a little indignant. But before she could protest he smiled at her.

“Never leave a partner in distress. Carlson and Peeters, page 825.”
