“Karrah! Karrah!!!”
Karrah didn’t respond to the calls after her. In fact as she heard it, she moved faster, breaking into a run into the rain. The continent of Antonica was infamous for its heavy rain, and this was one of its worst storms of the year. Blinded by tears and rain she ran through the city, not even noticing her robe weighing her down as it was soaked.
She couldn’t believe it. She just couldn’t believe it. He was with them all along. The ones who had been perusing her. The ones trying to kill her. The very people he swore to protect her from. He was one of them.
She went faster, determined in her scattered, crumbling thoughts to get as far away as possible. She could barely think. Everything she knew felt wrong. She was betrayed. That was all it came down to; Ryder betrayed her. He lead her to Freeport. He made her care. About him. About herself. About the world. And now this.
A patch of muddy grass caused her to slip as she ran, and she sprawled over the wet ground. She didn’t even attempt to get up, already defeated. She clutched the grass under her palms, sobbing, her mind looping everything maddeningly.
“Karrah…” came that voice again. A pair of boots came from behind her, coming right alongside her. She tried to ignore it, but when a pair of hands went to her shoulders, she scrambled away, whirling on the other person, who turned out to be Ryder. He stared at her with furrowed brows, his hand extended from where he hesitated to touch her. She glared at him through her tears, stumbling to her feet and inching away still.
“Please…” he said in what sounded like a pleading voice, trying to approach again.
“NO!” Karrah screamed, swatting blindly at his hand as she backed away, “You lied to me! You betrayed me! I never want to speak to you again!”
“No…no…I ’aven’t loyed…” Ryder shook his head, coming closer still, “I’d nevuh loy t’ye. Come on…you‘re gettin‘ sowked.”
“Stay away from me!” Karrah backed away more, finding herself against the brick wall that shielded the city. Ryder came close again.
“Karrah…”
She slapped his hand away violently as he tried to touch her shoulder again, and proceeded to shove him away, screaming as she beat frantically on his chest.
“You have no right to speak to me, you lying bastard! Get away from me! Go! And take your assassin friends with you! I hate you! I HATE YOU!”
“Jus’ ‘ear me out!“ Ryder suddenly seized her hands in one of his own, his other hand grabbing her shoulder roughly and shaking her, forcing her to look in his eyes. They were hard to see through the wet hair in his face, but they were wide and ridden with a sort of odd sorrow.
“It’s true. I wos with ‘em. I did all th’orrible things they did. But I ain’t in their group no more.
Whot I told ye about Grace is true. She wos assassinated. An’ that assassin wos me!” his voice wavered as he continued, not lessening his grasp on Karrah, “They wos ‘oldin’ ‘er ‘ostage t’keep me in th’band. They woulda killed ‘er if I didn’t stay. They promised she wouldn’t come t’no ‘arm if I did whot they said.
But they turned back on that promise. They sent me on a job…foynd a gal in this inn an’ snuff ‘er owt. It wos dark in that inn…I couldn’t see nothin’. I found th’room, I did as I wos told…but boy th’toym I saw ‘oo it wos it wos too late. They took advantage of th’dark an’ made me kill my own dearie Grace.
I couldn‘t live with that, Karrah. I wasn‘t gonna let ‘em manipulate me an‘ rip my ‘eart out.”
He matched her in tears now. His shaking hands slowly released her as he met her eyes begrudgingly. She stared back with wide, wet eyes.
“It’s all in the past now. I ain’t loyk that no more.”
“…Ryder…” Karrah choked, finally falling on his chest, embracing him as she sobbed into his tunic. He bowed his head over hers, petting her hair and resting his forehead on the top of her head.
“I’m so sorry…”
