Now that I think about it, there is a vague similarity between Avatar and Mononoke. Specifically how complicated the main characters are. (especially the kid with the burn on his eye...what's his nama again?)

Well, I started in the middle of season 2, and the last episode I saw was when they got Apa (Appa? Apaa?) back. He gets more complicated than THAT?!?
