decisions...decisions...
May. 8th, 2005 09:15 pmSooooo.....
The chances of getting the job are fairly high as long as I don't do or say anything stupid. At least according to Mom. Still, I'm a little nervous about it. For one thing, I don't know what kind of schedule I want. I'm not sure when I have to be decided, but I want to be decided by the time I go see the person who wants to hire me (apparently named Cindy?).
At first I was tempted to post this as an "On the other hand..." monologue a la Fiddler on the Roof, but I'll just put it like this.
They want me to work 20 hours a week. My choices are; work a few hours every day, or work full time three days a week.
Part time pros:
more free time daily
less work to do all at once
Part time cons:
no ride home from Mom
need money for bus fair
Full time pros:
more accomplishment daily
round-trip rides to work and back
more full days free
Full time cons:
more work to do
less free time
I think I had more, but I don't remember them.
Any thoughts?

Date: 2005-05-09 01:56 am (UTC)Part time cons - you have to work 5 days a week
Full time cons - long days
If you think you can take the long days, I think full time beats part time. Is it 3 full days? or still 20 hours? Which would be less than 3 full days.

Date: 2005-05-09 04:33 am (UTC)>less free time
Usually, I find when I have teh choice, that the full time hours fewer days a week gives me more free time. Teh part of the day that you're working on a part-time basis tends to such your attention away from other stuff, even if it's nominally the same amount of work time.

Date: 2005-05-09 04:58 am (UTC)Work hard. Play hard. This way you have work days and play days. Working many days only a little, you get days that are not quite either...
Alot of the hassle of work is getting out of bed and going to the job. Once I'm there, it's not so bad. So I'd give myself fewer and longer work days if given a chance.

Date: 2005-05-09 01:08 pm (UTC)On every day that you work, you also have to do all of the *things* that enable you to *go* to work, like getting *out* of bed, cleaning up, putting some actual pants on, and then there's the travel time to and from work.
etc etc. It's alot of little things, but they all add up to little things that you have to do every day AS WELL AS going to work. Rember that in the 5 days scenario, your free time won't actually start until you get home and that will be after the bus ride. If the bus arrives shortly after you're done and takes you straight home, you lose about 1/2 an hour. If you have to *wait* for the bus, you could easily lose an hour or more every day out of your free time just because of the bus and you're paying for the privilege as well.
If you're looking up to maximise your free time, 5 days isn't the way to go.
In the three days scenario, those things that you'd have to do to get to work, but might not do otherwise, all vanish on the days when you don't work, giving you more actual free time as opposed to "free time" that you're not spending at work, but spending anyway *because* of work.
I say take the three days
