Prompt: #1: Accomplished
Fandom: Rhythm Heaven
Genre: Romance
Rating: G
Notes: Yes, I just wrote a Rhythm Heaven drabble. Shut up. Based on the Love Lab minigame.
A scientific formula for love. It seemed simple enough in his head. But as weeks went by, he realized that there was no science he could think of to create, capture, or analyze it. No hypothesis to be written, no known chemical formula, no equipment to tinker with it, not a darn tangible clue.
As the deadline drew nearer he’d taken to simply combining random chemicals, which had created a sort of warm pink substance in the flask. Pink was often associated with love, so he thought maybe he could buy himself some time if he did some experiments with this mixture.
He polished his smudged glasses and peered at the substance over the Bunsen burner, waiting, hoping for any sort of reaction. But as the steam formed around the beaker, there seemed to be nothing happening.
“E-excuse me?”
Startled, he turned around, quickly putting his glasses back on to greet the person next to him. It was that new girl in the lab. She smiled at him and tucked her silky back hair behind an ear.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“Oh uh…that’s alright.” he replied sheepishly, adjusting his glasses.
“I was just wondering if I could help you with anything.”
“No, no thank you. I’m doing fine over here.”
“Oh…ok.“ She looked a little disappointed at that answer, but then smiled again.
“Well I’ll be going then…it was nice to meet you.”
She turned and headed for the door, her hair catching the light from the window. He turned to watch his unchanged project again, but then as her steps sounded further and further away, he suddenly looked up again.
“Uh, actually?” he started. She stopped in her tracks and turned to look at him again.
“Yes?”
He froze. He didn’t really know why he stopped her.
“Um…now that I think about it…I am running a little low on uh…uh…nitric acid.”
Nitric acid? Really? That was the best you could come up with? He kicked himself mentally as she just smiled at him.
“I’ll go get some then.”
She headed for the door, peering back at him as she started to step out, smiling.
“You have really pretty eyes.”
Then she giggled and disappeared through the door. His ears went red, and the collar of his lab coat itched, and behind him the formula on the Bunsen burner suddenly boiled wildly.
Perhaps love wasn’t so hard to find after all.
