Notes: I feel like this one real needs something, but I dunno what and I may as well post it already; I'm trying to catch up a little before NaNo; I've got at least four more unfinished after this one.

One thirty in the morning. Midna once again found herself slumped over her computer desk, head in her arms. She was depressed, no surprises there. She didn’t feel like sleeping or getting onto AIM, it was too late to listen to her Nightwish collection too loud, and there was nothing to do online.

Slowly she sat up, giving Diener a pat on the head before reaching for the phone. The malamute beside her nuzzled her with a sympathetic whine as she dialed a number and rested her head again, cradling the receiver under her arm.

A few rings later, a soft young voice answered.

“Couldn’t sleep?”

She smiled just a little at that.

“I could say the same for you, Makubex.”

A chuckle. “I had some homework to finish up. What’s on your mind, Midna-san?”

Midna sighed. “I’ve been thinking about him again.”

“Mello?”

She nodded, even though he couldn’t see it. “I don’t understand it…it’s been siz months. I’m better off without him. That whole thing was a disaster. I know all that and yet I…” she trailed off, not sure if she wanted to say what she was thinking. It was the truth, but it was hard to voice.

“…You still love him?” Makubex finished.

“More than I ever want to admit.” she sighed, “I know I’m better off now…there’s no way I could go back to that, or even want to. But I can’t stop thinking about him. I can’t help missing him.”

A pause followed, during which Midna looked down at her worried pet again and scratched him behind the ear. There was a quiet sigh on the other end of the line.

“I’m sorry you had to go through all that, Midna-san. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I’m sorry I don’t know what to say otherwise.”

“It’s alright,” the imp responded, “I just wanted to talk to somebody…it’s not easy being alone.”

“I know how that is. Ah, I have to go to bed though. I’m sorry.”

“It’s alright, I’m sorry to call so late.”

“Maybe you should get some sleep too, hm?”

Her smile returned briefly. “I don’t need to sleep.”

“No, but it might help you feel better.”

“Hm…we’ll see. Thanks for listening, Makubex.”

“Of course. We’ll talk at school, ok?”

“Ok.”

Midna sighed again, hanging up the phone. Diener nudger her hand as she let it rest at her side. She looked down at him sadly, slowly gliding out of her chair and wrapping her arms around his neck, burying her face in his fur.
