Prompt #79: Rejected
Fandom: Flamingo Heights/Houshin Engi+Yu Yu Hakusho
Genre: Angst
Rating: G
Notes: A very late plot bunny, based on an event in the game when Fugen confessed his love for Taikoubou, but found that Taikoubou didn’t return the feelings. Might need some tissues.
Kurama was still and quiet as he sat with the quivering Sennin. Taiitsu had begrudgingly gone to sleep long ago, leaving Fugen alone except for the aged kitsune. He kept his eyes soft and sad, and his arm around Fugen, half-hugging him and comforting him as he sat hugging his knees, crying silently.
It was a little unsettling to see him like this. Fugen was one of the calmest people in Flamingo Heights; one almost never saw him scared or upset. But having his heart broken by his best friend, by the one he had been in love with for thirty years, that was too much for the little angel.
“You don’t have to stay with me…” he said after a long time, “I’m sure Kayura-san needs you more.”
Kurama shook his head, “Hiyaihi is with her. She’ll be alright. Right now, I want to stay with you.” he smiled sadly, “You need a friendly voice, I can tell.”
He scooted a little closer, his one-armed embrace growing firmer as he rested his head on top of Fugen’s, the hand on his shoulder rubbing it gently.
“I’m truly sorry you have to go through this. I wish there was something I could say to fix everything for you.”
“What was I thinking?” Fugen whimpered, muffled behind his knees, “I knew he wasn’t going to take it well…I knew he wouldn’t feel the same…” he sobbed, curling tighter into his ball, “I shouldn’t have kissed him…I never should have said anything…”
“No, no, don’t hurt yourself,” Kurama hugged him gently, his other hand on the other shoulder now. “You’re in love, Tenshi-Fugen. You can’t deny what you feel. Taikoubou deserved to know.”
“Can’t I? I already hid it for thirty years. Couldn’t I have denied it longer?”
The kitsune sighed, brushing Fugen’s temple with the back of one finger. The Sennin leaned into the touch, finally looking up at him. His pale face glowed with tears.
“You did the right thing by telling him. I know how much it hurts that he could not return those feelings. Believe me, I know. But keeping those feelings bottled up was eating you alive. It was hurting you both.”
He brushed a tear away from the little angel’s face, offering a smile that he hoped was comforting, but appeared more sad. Fugen sniffled, his shoulders shaking and his eyes still wet.
“I….I just wish…” his let himself stop there, slinking to wrap his arms around Kurama’s torso, sobbing into his shirt. Kurama closed his eyes, not hesitating to return the hug just as tightly, rocking slightly and smoothing his sky blue hair.
“I know, Tenshi-Fugen. I know.”
