That put a very subversive thought into my head. One of the undercurrents in _Tommy_ was that the reason why he became so fractured was that event the people who should have been charged with *helping* him were inevitable just running their own agendas. Tommy didn't matter to anyone until he was famous, and even then, his "helpers" were just using him.
If you fail to keep a straight face, and are laughing and joking and horsing around with the doctors, with only the thinnest veneer of seriousness, it's the kind of thing that might just work. It's the sort of touch to make a throwaway bit a very powerful plot point.
This is the sort of thing that some directors hate but that some directors REALLY LOVE. It's worth asking about.
