Title: Carousel
Characters: Tsukasa and Saria
Rating: G
Saria sat on the bench, a smile on her face. In one hand she held a wad of blue cotton candy, and the other hand held her boyfriend's pale one. The path before them was noisy, crowded with shouts and laughter from people passing by, and the addictive organ music from the carousel behind them.
As they sat and Saria ate her cotton candy, Tsukasa was very quiet, deep in thought, as always. The green-haired girl looked over at him, a vague concern on her face. He had agreed to making a date at the carnival, but he was spaced out ever since they got off the carousel. Saria always worried when he got like that; he always seemed sad when he did and sadness was not something she liked to see.
"Doushita?" she asked eventually. Tsukasa blinked, turning to her as he was snapped out of his trance. She tilted her head cutely, looking up at him, making sure he was ok. After a moment he looked down at his feet, shifting slightly to keep holding his girlfriend's hand.
"Mmm, I was just thinking..." he began, "The horses on the carousel...they never really go anywhere. They just go around in a circle, carrying others in a circle. Wouldn't that be a sad life, going nowhere forever?"
Saria blinked, now also looking down.
"That would be sad..." she looked back at him again, "But do you think the horses really feel that way?"
Tsukasa didn't answer, keeping his gaze on the ground.
The carousel continued as the couple sat in silence again. Saria popped the last clump of her cotton candy into her mouth, listening to the organ chiming away; a simple waltz rhythm accompanying a medley of happy dances. The sugary substance dissolved on her tongue and a mischievous smile stretched her face as she turned to Tsukasa.
"Ne, Tsukasa-chan, you want to dance?"
The taller boy's silver hair whipped around him impressively as he turned to look at her suddenly, startled.
"Dance?" he asked a little nervously.
The kokiri smiled, standing up quickly.
"Come on!" she chirped, grabbing his arm and pulling him to his feet. Tsukasa stumbled along, red in the face, as she tugged him off the path to a clear section of grass close by.
"Um...Saria..." he mumbled, uncertain.
"It's ok, I'll lead!" Saria exclaimed as she turned, still beaming. She took both of his hands, forcing one of them to her waist (causing them both to blush). Then her own hand rested on his shoulder as she came a little closer to him.
"Don't think." she whispered, repeating the advice that she gave him when they danced at prom. Tsukasa gulped as she drew pack just a little. The carousel paused briefly to build up to Vienna Waltz.
One beat...Saria smiled up at her boyfriend, taking his free hand in hers.
Two beats...the joined hands raised to their eye level, poised to begin.
Third beat...Saria had already started.
As promised, the little girl lead, tugging Tsukasa lightly along by the hand as she turned him, her feet stepping in the perfect waltz time that she learned in Ashe's dance class. Tsukasa, however, wasn't faring as well. Awkward and unsure of his feet, he could only stumble along, watching their feet so he wouldn't step on her, and maybe pick up on her steps.
"S-Saria..."
"It's ok, come on!" Saria giggled at his clumsiness, taking another step and a sharp turn as the music sped up a little. Tsukasa wasn't expecting that, and lost his balance, falling on the smaller girl.
"Oops!" Saria laughed, catching his elbows as she stepped back, steadying them both, "Are you ok?"
"Y-yeah..." Tsukasa blushed, righting himself. Seeing that the pale boy was ok, Saria grabbed him again, putting him back in position.
"Try it again. You can do this." She smiled. Tsukasa looked down at her, gulped again, and slowly smiled. He squeezed her hand, and the dance started again.
This time they fared much better. Saria still lead, but this time Tsukasa seemed to be keeping up despite not mastering the steps. And even better, he was smiling this time. In fact, he even started to laugh after not too long.
“This isn’t so bad.” He chuckled, letting Saria take him around the field they had selected as a dance floor. Saria laughed right along with him.
“You see?”
The last song of the medley began, the familiar and inevitable Blue Danube. With the brief interlude before starting up full speed, Tsukasa suddenly tightened his grip on his girlfriend’s waist and hand and stepped ahead of her, taking the lead. Saria let out a little startled squeak as he did, but laughed followed along. Even with his still clumsy form it was a perfect moment.
A moment that passed not too long after, as the carousel’s song completely wound down. The couple parted, giggling, and bowed/curtsied to each other, as it seemed to call for. Then suddenly the sound of applause caused them to turn to look back out into the carnival grounds. Their dance had apparently called a crowd, and with that knowledge they matched each other in blush.
Sheepishly shuffling back onto the path, Tsukasa still smiled.
“That was…nice.” He said, tinged. Saria nodded, beaming just as brightly, then looked a little thoughtful as she took his arm.
“You know…I bet that’s how carousel horses feel.”
“Mm?”
Saria looked up at him, flashing her adorable grin again.
“They’re dancing!”
Tsukasa blinked, they smiled again, putting an arm around Saria and nuzzling her hair.
“Maybe.”
“Yosh! Let’s go on the bumper cars next!” Saria exclaimed, suddenly dashing ahead, once again pulling him along by the hand.
