I love Titanic.

I've loved it ever since I saw it in theatres 8 years ago. I love it even more now, after doing research on the real thing.

What I hate are the people who bash it for no good reason.

I state this because I remember talking with [livejournal.com profile] rinichan about Titanic; she hasn't seen it, and doesn't want to because of many things that people have said about it.

Probably the most common bash of the movie is "The ship sank. Get over it."

People who say that are clearly NOT PAYING ATTENTION!!!

You don't hear people say "Some Jews died. Get over it." or "Thousands of our troops died and we lost a war. Get over it." or "A few planes crashed into some buildings. Get over it."

Why?

Because those are some of the biggest tragedies in the history of mankind.

The Titanic's sinking was a REAL EVENT, and it goes on that list as well.

Don't believe me? Then think on this;

Titanic was deliberately made to match her name; she was a huge, beautiful vessel that made headlines before she even began her voyage. She was said to be the grandest ship in the world; God Himself couldn't sink her. However, the people who built her made mistakes. Multiple, STUPID, FATAL mistakes. The rudder was too small for sharp, sudden turns, like the one she had to make when the iceberg was before her. The lifeboats were only enough to fit half of the 2000 people aboard. I believe there were many more, but those are the two that stand out the most.

When she hit the berg, half the passengers didn't even take it seriously until the ship was halfway under. Then the panic and wreckage began. Only 20 boats, 70 people or less each, got off the ship in one piece, some barely making it. Of everyone left, the 1500 souls who weren't...
- drowned as the lower decks and lobby flooded
- electrocuted when the power shorted out
- crushed by falling smoke stacks, or the propeller blades when she split in two
- dead by a fall from the stern as it rose out of the water
- shot by a frantic crewman trying to control the crowd
...were left in the literally freezing water to die because nobody wanted to go back, for fear of getting swamped and pulled under. Even with one brave soul with a big heart to make up for his comrades' small brains went back, only 5 were recovered. Families were broken up. Big scars were left when that ship vanished to the bottom of the Atlantic ocean.

Yes, the ship sank. We all know that. Get over it? Tell that to the little girl who will never see her father again. Tell that to the first class passengers who heard the band play "Nearer My God to Thee" in their final moments. Tell that to the 700 women and children freezing in those lifeboats, watching the grandest ship in the world, the ship they all said was unsinkable, meet her burial at sea.

Seriously, Rini, don't listen to people who say that. Titanic is a wonderful, dramatic, heart-throbbing, pounding, and wrenching movie. You must see it. You will see it. If I half to tie you to the loveseat and duct tape your eyes open, you will see it. Yes, the love story is the main plot point, but I still consider the movie Historical Fiction first, Romance second.

Bonus stuff that might catch your eye; Kate Winslet (Most recent character: Clementine) plays Rose!
