Day 6: Your favorite band

NIGHTWISH.

(Hope the link works; I'm in the library and forgot my headphones again) While they weren't the first to introduce me to the concept of mixing rock and symphonic music, they're one of the best at it. My first taste of them was the above song. This was back when [livejournal.com profile] evenshadowscry and I were working on a Legend of Zelda fancomic, and he said he used this song as his image song for the final battle. He put it on the DVD player and started it. I didn't know what to expect but the dramatic symphonic part was definitely setting the right mood, I was into it and could totally see why he chose it.

Then the guitar came in. That's when I fell off the couch. Not long after the song was over I dragged D upstairs to burn his CD onto my computer. That album, Once, has a lot of my favorite songs, and is probably one of their more dramatic albums; it sounds very different from the other ones I own, and that's not a bad thing by any means; just a good example of bands changing their sound from album to album.

Speaking of which, I want to get on my soapbox for a minute because as far as I know this debate is still going on...

ANETTE OLZON DID NOT RUIN NIGHTWISH. I know, I know, everybody loves Tarja, everybody wants Tarja back. But when this debate was going on, a lot of them hadn't even HEARD the new album yet. Dark Passion Play was a Christmas present that year, and I was hooked the minute I played it. In fact as some of you know, The Poet and the Pendulum is one of my favorite songs now. Is Anette Tarja? No. Is that a bad thing? NO. Anette does have a very different sound, we certainly won't be hearing any new versions of Phantom of the Opera, but it WORKS. The group played very well with their new singer, adjusted their sound to fit with her, and yet it's still very much Nightwish. (Plus Anette gets bonus points for being in my range so I don't kill my voice singing along.) Just because something is different doesn't mean it's bad, and I wish fans would realise that. A LOT of old Legend of Zelda fans complained about the changes in Ocarina of Time, but now it's deemed the "best Zelda game ever". Why can't the rest of us adapt like that?
