May. 27th, 2006 10:40 pmToday, I will have officially stayed up for 24 hours for the first time in years. And I'm wide awake.
I feel like I'm regressing to my inner child...I've been pulling out old videos that I loved as a kid and watching them. Today's nostalgia rewatch was the animated Gulliver's Travels movie from the 30s. It was about what I remembered; barely had anything to do with the book, but a delight to watch and had beautiful music. Two things irked me about it, though.
First was not the movie's fault though;
I don't know if anybody knows the story, but basically it's about the people in Lilliput (is that right?); the king of Lilliput and the king of another little person country are signing a wedding contract between their children, Princess Glory and Prince David. But just when everything is prepared, a feud breaks out because they can't agree on which kingdom's anthem should be played at the wedding; Faithful or Forever. War breaks out over this issue, and with Gulliver's help, they combine the two songs into Faithful Forever. Here's the peeve; Faithful Forever is a beautiful song, but of course to truly appreciate it, you have to know both songs. Glory sings Faithful before the war is declared. Then afterward, when war starts, and David has to go home with his father, he sings Forever before he goes. The problem? I have a crappy tape with a lot of parts cut out, INCLUDING the first time David sings the song!!! So the only time we get to hear the original thing is when they reunite near the end of the movie, and you don't get to hear the whole thing. Missed the point much?
The other peeve with the movie, though, IS the movie's fault; Glory and David have silent roles except for singing, until the very very end, when David almost gets himself killed to save Gulliver's life, and Faithful Forever is sung. Anyway, in that scene, they have spoken lines, very brief, but noticable. The problem with that is that for their only spoken parts, they SUCKED! I think the voice actors for the lines were different from the singing, because they sounded NOTHING like the singers. Glory had a beautiful metzo-soprano similar to Snow White, only much less irking. When she spoke, she sounded like a bad anime dub actress. I'm serious. As for David, I wouldn't have been as irked if there was at least consistency. He had a rich baritone when he sang, but his spoken voice was closer to his age (approx. 16). Both of them were great for him, but in context of each other, it was annoying. Anyway, I just wanted to get that off me. If you haven't, you should see the movie. It's not the greatest film of all time, but it's worthwhile. Yay Prince David!
