It was a warm day in the outskirts of the Yin. A perfect day for fishing, which was exactly what Fugen and Taikoubou had set out to do.
But not everything had gone according to plan. At the moment, Taikoubou was knee-deep in the river, wading off in an attempt to find his fishing pole as Fugen watched from the shore.
“Dammit!” he growled, rummaging through the water, “What kind of fish just swims off with a hook like that?”
“I told you to use one of mine, Bou-chan…” Fugen chuckled, sitting on a rock and paddling his bare toes in the water. Taikoubou twitched, barely offering a sideways glare at his friend.
“I didn’t want to use yours.” he grumbled, “Mine was better anyway.”
“Of course.” Fugen teased, “A little too good, it seems.”
Taikoubou didn’t dignify that with an answer, merely looking through the clear water again and grumbling, finding that it was likely swept away.
“So much for fishing…” he sighed.
Behind him, Fugen just smiled. He enjoyed spending time with Taikoubou no matter what they were doing. And as he watched Taikoubou wading through the cool water, back turned, his smile grew a mischievous glint.
Waiting a moment for the perfect chance, he quickly kicked at the water on his toes, splashing Taikoubou’s back with a small wave.
“HEY!” the Doushi whirled around, leering at Fugen, who did his best to look innocent. The halo probably helped. But Taikoubou wasn’t convinced. He waded back toward the haloed boy on the rock, still glaring.
But as he got close, his dark look turned to a wide-eyed, fanged grin.
“Heh~” he smirked for a moment, before attacking Fugen’s sides, tickling him mercilessly.
The sudden “AAH!” that came from Fugen sounded more like a bird’s squawk than a yelp as he curled instinctively, trying to defend against the tickling. He laughed and squirmed, attempting to get away, managing some giggling cries of “No! No no NOO!”
On that last yell he finally slipped off of the rock and fell into the river. He was ducked under for a second, but Taikoubou was still holding onto his sides, taking advantage to grab onto him and pull him up. Fugen sputtered a moment, shaking his wet hair out of his face.
“You alright?” Taikoubou asked, genuinely worried in comparison to how playful he was before.
“I’m fine, I’m fine.” Fugen wiped more water from his face, still smiling as ever. And upon seeing that his friend was ok, Taikoubou smiled again.
“Good.” And he splashed at Fugen.
The merrymaking and horseplay continued through the afternoon, chasing each other through the water, splashing and dunking like a pair of preteens. When they were finally too cold and exhausted from laughing they climbed out, sitting on the edge of the river again. By then it was sunset, so the two of them watched, shivering, but enjoying the moment anyway.
“We should come here more often, Bou-chan.”
“Yeah. We should.”
