Drabble #6

Prompt #23: Curious
Fandom: Senkaiden Houshin Engi
Genre: General
Rating: G
Notes: Another piece of Fugen’s history that came to me when I was at Faerie Fest. It’s a cute scene, so I figured I’d write it for this :) I hope it's good...I dunno how I feel about the ending.

Fugen was still trying to find his feet. He had only been in the Sennin World a few days, and in that time he had been in his own dorm while the ones who brought him worked to enroll him. He didn’t get much chance to speak with anyone else, save for his roommate who seemed to prefer napping to conversation. Once he was finally given some time to himself, he took advantage of it to learn more about the Sennin World.

Unfortunately, without being able to fly or permission to use one of those flying robots that brought him here, he was stuck only looking around the Kongrong dorms. But he was curious enough that that would do.

He padded through the metal halls, fidgeting with the clothes that were given to him; they hung off of his shoulders in a way he wasn’t used to. Everything was wide open and empty, while when he first arrived there were thousands of other doushi around.

He paused, hearing a strange, loud buzzing from a room nearby. He grew curious and went toward it. The door was part-way open, so he pushed it just enough that he could peek inside to see what was happening.

There was a boy inside, looking to be a few years older than he was, back turned to the door as he worked on something Fugen couldn’t see. There were several scattered items around the room, along with tools and broken things. The young Doushi carefully slid into the room, not making a sound, wishing to watch without disturbing the other person.

Until that other person spoke, only half looking toward the intruder. His eyes were covered by a black visor.

“Are you lost, little one?”

Fugen jumped, slinking back a little.

“Oh, I’m sorry…I was just…”

The older boy laughed, “It’s alright, you‘re not disturbing me. Come on in!”

Fugen hesitated a moment before creeping closer, looking around. The other person went back to his work, poking his project with some sort of tool, releasing sparks.

“Where is everyone?” the little Doushi asked as a general question.

“Probably out training.” the older boy replied, pulling the tool away and lifting his visor. Big, cheerful blue eyes looked at Fugen with a friendly smile.

“What’s your name, kid?”

“Ah…it’s Fugen.” the boy smiled, lowering his head shyly in a polite bow.

“I’m Taiitsu.” the older boy smiled again, seeming to sparkle a little as he did, “Welcome to the Kongrong Mountains.”

“Are you a Sennin, Taiitsu-san?”

“Me? Nah…I’m still just a Doushi.” Taiitsu smirked, “But someday I’ll be one of the greatest Sennin of Kongrong! You’ll see!”

Fugen blinked a moment before smiling again, already taking a liking to him. Taiitsu took another tool from close by, a screwdriver, and started poking at his project again. Fugen stayed back with his hands folded, watching curiously. The object being assembled was a narrow cylinder with a hollow opening on the front. The long side was open, exposing wires and complicated-looking gadgets that Taiitsu was poking at with his screwdriver.

“What is that thing?” he asked after a few minutes of silence.

“This?” Taiitsu held up the device, looking it over, “It’s my newest Paopei invention!”

“Paopei…?”

Taiitsu found another nodule in the device, poking at it again with his screwdriver and twisting it.

“Do you know how they choose who comes to the Sennin World, Fugen?”

Fugen shook his head.

“It’s because of your bones. 0.0001% of all humans are born with a special bone structure that’s ideal for becoming a Sennin.

That’s what these are for.” he held up the rod-shaped device again, “Paopei draw their energy from Sennin bones to create miracles!”

Fugen was genuinely intrigued as Taiitsu chattered on, looking over the little object in his hands.

“And you make them?”

“Not all of them.” Taiitsu answered, smiling, “Just the best ones.” he seemed to sparkle again as he said that.

Fugen looked over the Paopei again. “What do they do?”

“It depends on the Paopei. No two are alike. Most of them are designed to suit the needs of the individual Sennin.”

He sighed as he closed the panel and screwed it in place.

“There. That should do it.” He smirked at Fugen again, as he stood, holding the rod in his right hand, “Watch this.”

He pressed a button on the side. Fugen jumped and stepped back a few feet at the sudden crackling sound that came from the device. A bolt of light a few feet long burst out of it, emitting a low hum.

“Isn’t it cool?” Taiitsu grinned, twirling it, “A blade of light that’s sharper than any sword! It can cut through almost anything!”

But as he said that, the beam of light shrank, going back into the tube. Taiitsu blinked, looking over it again and shaking it, trying to get it to activate again.

“Gah!” he drew his hand back, dropping it when it shocked him instead. Both Doushi stepped back as they watched it spark, electricity rippling around it violently. There was a flash, and Fugen shielded his eyes in time for a loud BOOM and a rush of air.

The dust cleared, and Fugen opened his eyes and looked at the broken, smoking Paopei on the floor. Taiitsu hesitantly went toward it, looking at the scattered pieces and the compartment blasted open, where the smoke was coming from.

“Heh. Back to the drawing board, I guess.”
