Why not give it a try and even if you end up quitting that'll only teach you more about yourself. I've taken several approaches to teaching myself Spanish and have already failed twice. The first time because I didn't set a clear goal and thus lost interest. The second because even though I had a goal, I was too rigorous and burnt myself out very quickly. I'm preparing to attempt it again with this information in mind until I finally get it. I think your violin could be the same, or if you find out it's not for you as your other friend said, then maybe you'll be able to use what you learned for another interest.
